10th Red Bull Nanshan Open is here!

November23
After a decade of driving the Chinese snowboard scene, the Nanshan Open celebrates its 10th birthday in style this January 14th & 15th by gaining 5Star TTR status to become the largest slopestyle snowboard competition in Asia.

The Nanshan Open earns its reputation as one of the most enjoyable contest trips on the TTR World Tour by providing a perfect blend of contest riding, cultural immersion and local hospitality. The local Mellowparks.cn park and event crew step it up each year to build one of Asia's top slopestyle terrain parks - mixing huge, perfectly shaped jumps with creative and challenging jib features in the Nike Nanshan Park. A true 'for-riders-by-riders' event, organizers Steve Zdarsky and Marco Huang can be seen testing the kicker and obstacle setup themselves on training day, while the rest of their crew always find time to ride and hang with the competitors post-event. It's clear that the crew shares a strong passion towards the sport - surrounding the event with a truly friendly and laid-back atmosphere, somewhat rare in today's competitions!

As top snowboarders from all corners of the globe converge on Chinese soil for a shot at the prize, 2012 promises to be the year the 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open reaches new heights for Chinese snowboarding!

From humble beginnings...

The Nanshan Open began in 2002 when a small group of friends threw the first snowboard competition ever held on Chinese soil. As the contest gained momentum and popularity the following years, in 2007 it earned global recognition as a 3Star stop on the TTR World Tour. The Nanshan Open 'leveled up' to 4Star status the subsequent year and in 2010 was the largest Asian event on the TTR World Tour.

Now a 5Star event, the two-day competition offers up US$50,000 in prize money and is preceded by a 2Star local qualifier on January 7th that will earn six Chinese riders a chance to compete in the Open alongside their international idols!

The event has hosted a who's-who of up and coming riders, including Transworld's 'Rookie of the Year' Austin Smith, young stars Nils Arvidsson and Anton Bilare along with the Isenseven, Nitro RoadWarriors and Pirate Movie Productions film crews. Past winners of the event include Juuso Laivisto (2010), Freddy Austbo (2009), Jakob Wilhelmson (2008) and Hampus Mosesson (2007), while everyone's favorite OG shredder Travis Parker came on as guest judge for 2011. Last year saw local young-gun He Wei make a name for himself, placing 8th in the highest finish to date for a Chinese rider in a TTR competition.

2012 will be the Open's sixth year with Red Bull as the title sponsor - this long term partnership has allowed both organizer and sponsor alike to focus on improving their event and raise the bar year after year. The Red Bull Nanshan Open has undoubtedly put China on the snowboarding map, and anticipation is high on what 2012 holds for the event!

What the riders say...

"The Nanshan Open in China was amazing. From the moment we arrived in Beijing we were taken care of so well. Amazing dinners every night, nice hotels and we got to do lots of touristy stuff... The comp was fun too, definitely one of my better snowboarding experiences" - Nick Brown, 2010

"Best trip of the season: Going to China for the Nanshan Open..." Tobi Strauss, 2010

"One of my TOP events - always so stoked to get an invite and would never say no. It is just an awesome time... You get together with all your buddies from around the world and the snowboard industry, meet in China and have the best seven days that will be in your memories forever..." - Peter König - 2008 & 2009

"It was my first time in China... it was a really good experience! We all had a really good time and were looked after so well" - Tyler Chorlton, 2009

"Best Trip: China's Nanshan Open" - Hampus Mosesson, 2007

For just $49, the resort's 'Get On Board' program will enable guests to purchase a lift ticket, rent equipment and partake in a group lesson – a value of nearly $125 if purchased separately. The program will be in green-light mode from 1 p.m. Sundays through close of day on Fridays, from Dec. 10 (projected opening day of the 2011-12 ski season) through the end of the season.

Those wishing to take advantage of the program should visit the Wintergreen Resort web site – http://www.wintergreenresort.com – and print out the "Get On Board” coupon, which is redeemable at the cashier window. Skiers and snowboarders with the lift ticket will be eligible to ski the mountain's central slopes, with runs ideally tailored for beginners.

Wintergreen Resort – twice named "Best Ski Resort” by readers of the Washington Post.com – features a full complement of lessons for all ages and ability levels. A perfect match for 'Get On Board' guests is the resort's 'Guaranteed Learn to Ski & Ride' lesson where the Wintergreen staff guarantees that skiers (ages 6 and older) and riders (ages 8 and older) will be turning and stopping by the end of the first lesson.

Head and Rossignol rental equipment is available for skiers and snowboarders, and the rental shop is now paperless so that rentals are processed electronically. Pre-registering online (http://www.wintergreenresort.com/Rentals/) for rentals is free and gets the skier and snowboarder on the snow faster.

"Get On Board” coupons will provide skiers and snowboarders access to the mountain from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 1 to 9 p.m. non-holiday Sundays. The coupons are limited to groups of eight participants or fewer, and are not redeemable Dec. 26 through Jan. 2, 2012 or the Sundays of Martin Luther King or Presidents' Day weekends. Coupons expire 14 days after print date (http://www.wintergreenresort.com/GetOnBoardVA/).

Those who don't "Get On Board” in December should set their sights on January, which has been officially recognized as "Snow Sports Month” in Virginia by Gov. Robert McDonnell. In part, the proclamation states that, "participating in recreational activities such as snow skiing is an exciting way to both stay physically active and enjoy the beauty of winter in the Blue Ridge mountains and...to experience the wonder and thrill of learning and participating in winter sports in Virginia.”

Wintergreen offers 26 slopes on 129 skiable acres, with 23 percent perfect for beginners. Fourteen slopes are lighted for night skiing.

Wintergreen Ski Patrol, which is dedicated to ensuring an enjoyable and safe experience for all mountain guests, has been named the winner of the Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol Award for 2010-11 by the National Ski Patrol. The Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam 2011 is History…

November17
DRAMA and GLORY! Under brazenly perfect weather conditions, the international freestyle community celebrated the ninth edition of the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam in the Horsefeathers Superpark Dachstein – one of the best ones ever! At an unprecedented level, the snowboard elite was battling for the victory of this TTR 4 star contest in the perfectly shaped park. After a two day trick fireworks, the Belgian Seppe Smits and Aimee Fuller from Great Britain were smiling down from the top of the podium as winners of the Super Finals. The only 19-year old Matthias Weißenbacher caused a sensation in reaching the third rank!

DRAMA – Friday's Qualification

The qualification has rarely been frequented as good as at this year's edition of the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam. The riders more than lived up to the audience's active interest and performed an ingenious freestyle spectacle in the Horsefeathers Superpark Dachstein. The consistently high riding level made it tough for the judges to make their decision but ultimately, only the top 21 boys and the top 7 girls could secure themselves a starting position in the finals. In addition to proceeding to the finals, the winners of the qualification also got a nice amount of price money.

Among the boys, the young Jamie Nicholls (GBR) saved the victory with two terrific runs, Emil André Ulsletten (NOR) secured the second rank and Ville Paumola (FIN) turned out third.

The extremely high riding level especially manifested among the ladies where last year's Best Trick winner, Klaudia medlova (SVK) emerged victorious in the qualification. The Austrian Christina Gruber gained the second rank and Cilka Sadar (SLO) finished third.

The prospects for gripping Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam were immensely bright on Friday already.

GLORY – Saturday's Finals

On the day of the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam finals, the park once again shone in all its splendor under blue skies. After Friday's incredibly exciting qualification, the people were on fire even prior to the finals' first heat. Now the climbers from the qualification were to face the ‘invited riders'. For the first time, each rider only had three runs exactly to prove his technical skills as well as his style. This system guaranteed an once again gripping and varied contest for riders as well as audience.

In the MEN category, for quite some time it seemed as if the strong Scandinavians, the emerging talent Niklas Mattson (SWE) in particular, were about to win. Niklas did an amazing performance and enthralled audience and judges alike with his difficult tricks and stylish airs. At the end of the day, he was overtrumped only by the Belgian prodigy Seppe Smits, who convinced the Jury with incredibly precise jumps and runs: "Really good! It was a good day, I was killing it , the setup was good and I had a fun time – lovely!” In winning the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam, Seppe also scored important points for the TTR World Snowboard Tour.

The sensation of the day was the Austrian Matthias Weißenbacher, who managed to battle all the way through the qualification up to the third rank, and thus left superstars such as Torstein Horgmo or Marko Grilc behind: „I'm feeling great – the third place. I really did not expect this!"

In the ladies semifinals, an exciting battle already loomed between Aimee Fuller (GBR), Cheryl Maas (NED), Cilka Sadar (SLO) andSarka Pancochova (CZE). The super finals turned into an accordingly hot battle. Despite incredible performances of all of the four girls, ultimately it was Aimee Fuller who was able to convince audience and judges the most. Cilka Sadar gained the second rank and Sarka Pancochova turned out third. Thus, the likable English girl secured her first victory in a TTR Contest: "I'm speechless and incredibly happy! This is my first victory ever! I had such an amazing time here, with the sunshine every day – what else could you possibly want?”

Best Trick - Ticket to the Balicamp

This year, no less than two riders had the possibility to earn a two week's trip to the legendary Balicamp, including accommodation, surf coaching, a customized surfboard and a Surfbag by Blue Tomato as well as a subsidy to the flight sponsored by Sudden Rush. In the men's category, the fourth-placed Thorgren Sven from Sweden stoked the audiences and judges with a massive backside 1080! At the girls, Cheryl Maas (also fourth place) from the Netherlands could secure the prize for her bold BS 7 tail grab. Happy surfing and chilling out!

Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam Party Line

Traditionally, the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam party factor did not come too short. The series of bashes was launched on Thursday at the 'Riders Welcome Party' in the aQi Hotel Schladming on the new season. On Friday after an atmospheric gala dinner for riders and media, the Schladming Tauern Halle was already tested for the lightening Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam Party Night on Saturday that left no eyes dry! Both, in the Schladming Tauern Halle as well as in the Cult Club riders and visitors were swinging to dawn on the dance floors and let the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam fade out appropriately!

The ending of the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam marked the beginning of the 2nd QParks Tour 2011! After the first tour stop at the Dachstein, already on the 17th December, the Blue Tomato Plan P will sweep audiences at the Horsefeathers Superpark Planai, where also freeskiers can get back to business. All information on the QParks Snowboard Tour and the QParks Freeski Tour can be found on www.qparkstour.com. Be sure to stay tuned!

Unlimited FREE Ski Lift Tickets at Mt. Baldy

November11
Never purchase another ski lift ticket ever again with new, unique Membership Program launched by Mt Baldy Ski Lifts

Mt Baldy Ski Lifts announced a unique Membership Program where skiers and snowboarders receive unlimited free lift tickets all season long.

After a nominal $40.00 activation fee, members pay low monthly dues of $19.97 members will never have to purchase lift tickets or season passes ever again.

These lifetime Memberships are month to month and cancelable at anytime and allow members unlimited year-round access to the mountain. Free lift tickets are also available for mountain biking, hiking and sightseeing during the summer season.

Management also announced that the activation will increase to $150.00 very soon.

"This program was developed because many of our skiers and snowboarders couldn't afford, due to economic conditions, the lump sum payment for a season pass. Everybody can afford $19.97 a month and receive more value for their money, ” states Ron Ellingson President of Mt Baldy Ski Lifts.

Mt Baldy is minutes north of Upland and Claremont off the 210 freeway. It is the closest ski resort to most of Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire and all of Orange and San Diego Counties. Mt Baldy Ski Lifts is open during the summer on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays for scenic rides, hiking and mountain biking. Dining is available at the Top of the Notch Restaurant located at the top of the chairlift.

"With the Mt Baldy Membership programs customers will never have to purchase a lift ticket again. In essence customers are getting all the benefits of both a winter and summer season pass with monthly dues of $19.97. That's it!”

"As long as a member is good standing and current with dues, they get unlimited skiing, snowboarding and scenic rides in the summer.”

"To our knowledge this program is unique and not offered by any other ski area.”

Two seasons ago, in addition to increasing their snowmaking capabilities, Mt Baldy pioneered the "virtual season pass” program that offered skiers and snowboarders deep discounts on season passes. Unlike full season pass holders a physical season passes are not issued and ski reservations are required 24 hours in advance.

Virtual season passes are still offered by Mt Baldy Ski Lifts and still available until opening day of the ski season.

Ellingson continues, "A limited number of Charter memberships are being offered for a limited time with all activation fees waived. Membership just requires the initial payment of the first two months and then ongoing monthly billing of debit or credit card. That's it!”

"Unlike membership programs elsewhere, there's no legalese and no long term commitments. Membership are month to month and may be cancelled at any time. Simply put, if monthly dues are paid, the customer gets complete year round access to the mountain. "

"We believe this program is revolutionary in the ski industry and it wouldn't surprise us if other ski areas nationwide follow suit to help make year round recreation more affordable,” concludes Ellingson.

For more information on the Mt Baldy Membership program please go to www.MtBaldySkiLifts.com
