2014 Canadian National Snowboard Team Announced

July30
With the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia scheduled for February, the Canadian team is now stronger than ever. Last season the team set a new record with 55 podiums finishes. Highlights include medals from 20 FIS World Cups, 14 World Snowboard Tour (5/6 star) contests, nine Winter X Games and four FIS World Championships. Canadians also won two World Snowboard Tour titles and one Crystal Globe award. The 2014 National Team consists of 19 male and 14 female athletes from the following disciplines: slopestyle, halfpipe, snowboard cross, parallel slalom and parallel giant slalom.

Two new athletes have also been added to the roster this year. Junior World Champion Tyler Nicholson of North Bay, Ont. joins the slopestyle team and Calynn Irwin of Toronto, Ont. is the newest halfpipe recruit.

"I'm very proud of our 2014 team. The next few months will be tough for the athletes but I know they will all work hard to achieve their Olympic goals. We also have several strong medal contenders so it will be exciting to see the Olympic Games unfold,” said Canada Snowboard Executive Director Steven Hills.

For the 2014 Games, Canada Snowboard is hoping to earn the maximum of 24 quota spots and six athletes have earned provisional spots based on their results from last season.

These include slopestyle riders Mark McMorris, Sebastien Toutant and Spencer O'Brien. Joining them will be snowboardcross team members Chris Robanske, Dominique Maltais and Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion Maëlle Ricker.

"I couldn't be happier for all the athletes that have already earned provisionary nominations for Sochi. I know that the rest of the team members will give it their all in the coming months. This is what they have been working towards for a very long time and I'm confident our team will make Canada proud this winter,” said Canada's Snowboard High Performance Director Robert Joncas.

At the 2014 Games, slopestyle snowboarding and parallel slalom will make their Olympic debut. Men's slopestyle will be the first medal awarded at the Games. The Canadian team is expected to perform well in this discipline based on their strong performance this past season. Mark McMorris landed on the podium at nearly every event he entered. After winning gold medals in slopestyle at the Dew Tour, X Games and Burton US Open, he was named the 2012/2013 World Snowboard Tour Slopestyle Champion. Teammate Sebastien Toutant of Montreal, Que. was crowned the 2012/2013 World Snowboard Tour Big Air Champion. Meanwhile, Spencer O'Brien of Courtenay, B.C. is the 2013 women's slopestyle World Champion.

Parallel Slalom will be the last snowboard event in Sochi. Team member Caroline Calve of Gatineau, Que. won her first World Cup in parallel slalom in Moscow in February. From there, Calve finished off her season winning both the PSL and PGS nationals in Quebec.

The Winter Olympics will be held from February 7 to 23, 2014.
