Software Engineer – Cars.com (Santa Monica)

October31
Do you have a passion to be the best? Do you want to be a part of a team who recognizes and appreciates you and your work? We want to talk to you about joining our Internal Systems team. We are a small department in a medium sized company and have a start-up culture with the stability and backing of a profitable corporation.

What your job will look like:
- Full Software Development Life-Cycle for new systems and improvements and enhancements to existing internal systems Java and PHP applications.
- Provide leadership in the areas of software design and industry best practices and trends.
- Proactively communicate with members of other departments to identify and solve technical and process issues.

You're a self-motivated, ferocious problem solver. Don't know a programming language that would be best for a situation? You learn it. Not sure what the best DB structure might be for a given application? You research options, make suggestions, and hash it out with the team.
You're a team player. This sounds like a cliché but we're a small team. There's a team effort to move our projects forward quickly and get them done correctly. We work closely to get it all done: generate ideas, designs, and code -- and accept feedback in stride.
You're a generalist. You're not a one trick pony who is an expert in only one thing. You're a programming polyglot, fluent in several programming languages and paradigms. You live on the bash command line but maybe you can also admin a Windows domain. Maybe you've done time in QA, NetOps, or as a DBA.
You dream in OO. You're a skilled object oriented designer and have a strong command of common design patterns. You are familiar with a framework or two of some sort.
You like to work on Linux. The servers are Linux, the desktops are Linux. You do not need to be a guru, but the more Linux knowledge such as shell scripting and configurations you know the better.
What you need to get your foot in the door:
- A minimum 2-3 years current, hands on, professional software development experience; ideally 5+ years experience including object-oriented analysis and design. Software design pattern knowledge is a huge plus.
- Linux experience including basic scripting and programming is a plus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current software engineering best practices.
- A generalist background with wide exposure to several programming paradigms, systems, a variety of concepts and approaches. A "jack of all trades" instead of a niche specialist.
- Proven leadership skills as an individual contributor (i.e., non-manager) and the passion to make a difference.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
